Key Ways to Best Decorate a Large Room in Your Home

While many of us are familiar with the pain points of decorating small, compact spaces, sometimes we can have the opposite problem.

If you have one or more rooms in your property that are very large, you may find that it’s trickier than you expected to design the space effectively.

Read on for some tips for getting a sizeable area looking and feeling as comfortable as you’d like.

Consider Scale

Pay close attention to scale when decorating a substantial area of your home. When it comes to furnishings and even fixtures and fittings for the space, choose pieces that are appropriate for it. Anything too small will just look silly.

If the room has high ceilings and is long and wide, steer clear of goods that sit too close to the ground, as these will look even smaller and can seem lost in the big room. Instead, opt for higher-set pieces, such as those with higher legs or at least higher seating.

If you want to place some fans in the room to help cool it down, scale is vital, too. When buying a smart ceiling fan, for instance, pick out a large product or consider buying two or more to cater to the grand space. If you’re buying a rug, you either want a huge one or buy a couple for the area, and the same goes for artwork, too.

Set Up Zones

Another great way to decorate a substantial part of your house is to set up zones within it. This helps to make it look a lot cozier, as you create separate areas within the one room, each of which feels more snug. Ensure that the zones you set up relate well enough to each other and that all parts of the space flow and work together.

For example, in a living room, you can arrange furniture in one spot for watching TV or other media, another for reading comfortably or conversing with your family or guests, and another for gaming. You might also add a bar and drinks area or even a spot to have a quick meal or read the paper with your morning coffee.

Add Architectural Elements

One of the great benefits of a large room is that you have plenty of space to play around with and can add architectural elements that wouldn’t suit a compact space. For example, you might like to invest in installing moldings, columns, a bay window, a drop ceiling, or other features to enhance this part of your home.

Doing this can ensure the area doesn’t come across as too overwhelming and create memorable features that will truly make the property stand out.

Keep Furniture Away from Walls

While you might be used to placing your furniture, such as sofas and chairs and the like, next to walls in smaller rooms, in big ones, this doesn’t work so well. It can feel awkward and make those in the space feel like they need to shout at each other to be heard.

You’re better off moving pieces closer together, away from the walls, and keeping furnishings within around three feet or so of each other. This closeness will help make a large area feel warm and inviting and not look too cavernous.

Create a Focal Point

While this tip isn’t exclusive to substantial spaces, it does suit them well: anchor the room by creating a focal point to draw the eye. You don’t want a big area to come across as cluttered or messy because you put in too many elements to try and fill it. As such, decide on one feature item or another decorating choice that will bring the design together and keep things looking cohesive.

You might bring in a beautiful grand piano, a stunning painting or sculpture, or buy or have made some huge built-in bookcases to take up one wall. A long, sectional, L-shaped sofa can work as an excellent anchor, as can large chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

These are just some ways you can best decorate a large piece of your property. Other ideas include utilizing plenty of patterns and texture to add bulk and bringing in tall potted plants to fill vertical height or take up space in corners of a large room. You can fill dead wall space, too, not just with art pieces but also with console tables placed against walls or benches tucked along them.

Get creative with your lighting and paint choices, too, and above all else, be bold with your design choices. A large room is a place where you can play and have some fun, so don’t miss out on the opportunity!
