Clean Your Ring like a Professional…At Home!

Have you ever looked down at your wedding ring and wondered how in the heck it got so disgusting?  I have!  Only problem is, is that I don’t have time to go get my ring cleaned every few months.  So a few years ago I set out to find the easiest, cheapest, and most effective way to clean my jewelry.

How the Pros Do It

After doing some research, I found out that many jewelers clean their rings through ultrasonic cleaners and then polish the rings. I don’t have an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner (but I have looked into getting one!) so I decided to create my own!

The only thing that I own that has ultrasonic action is my Sonicare Toothbrush. So could I use my toothbrush to clean my ring the same way I would clean my teeth?

How Can a Toothbrush Help?

Because electric toothbrushes vibrate at such high rates (about 30,000 brush strokes per minute) it has the ability to do a MUCH better job than just using a plain ole toothbrush. Imagine moving your toothbrush up and down 30,000 times in 1 minute. Not. Gonna. Happen. So when I was finished with an old toothbrush head, instead of throwing it away, I kept it! Just for this purpose!

What Cleaner to Use

To start, I got a very small dish poured in some Hydrogen Peroxide. I put my ring in the dish and soaked it in Hydrogen Peroxide to soften the dirt that gathers in all of the cracks of my ring. This works especially well for the impossible to reach places. I let it soak for about 5-10 minutes.

Hydrogen Peroxide can be fascinating to watch because it bubbles up when it is cleaning the really nasty stuff. So my ring was completely covered in Hydrogen Peroxide bubbles! Gross!

How To

When I felt like it had enough time to soak, I took my ring out of the bowl, got my electric toothbrush wet, turned it on, and cleaned every nook and cranny of my ring. The before and after is astounding! It isn’t quite as good as taking it to the jeweler but it’s pretty darn close!

If you buy an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, those can also be used for other items such as glasses. But nobody in our house wears glasses, so this simple solution works great for me! Try this method out and come back and let me know if this worked as well for you as it did for me!
